In 1979, the President of Afghanistan, Hafizullah Amin, was killed inside his palace just outside of Kabul, Afghanistan. His killers were men he trusted with his life, men he had requested come to protect him from the phantom assassins he imagined. His story is a word of warning to protection professionals to protect against insider and allied threats. It is a reminder that accurate protective intelligence is absolutely vital in planning the protection of a principal. It is a reminder that our clients exist in a grand environment far beyond simple immediate interpersonal relationships and we must understand the strategic context of their lives and their place in the world.
